Required reading.

Mindy McAdams, with more of what we talked about on Tuesday. Please be prepared to discuss this in class. I will be posting the materials for your next assignment tonight. The images will be on Blackboard.

Basic elements of design

We’ll be talking a bit more about the basic design elements and how they apply to a project plus we’ll be looking at the two-page packages you’ve been working on.

A little update

I’ve updated the grade book and I’m commenting my way through your blogs (I’ve read them all). I was very generous with the grades but a couple of things need repeating:

  • Assignments can be turned in one time for a better grade.
  • Late assignments will cost you one full letter grade (this cannot be made up).
  • Pay attention to the project parameters. For example, each panel needs to be 4×6″, make each panel 4×6″.

I graded the three online assignments as a quiz (4 pts each, +8 pts for content). There will be some extra points available for online participation (both for extra blog posts and comments on others’ blogs). We’ll be starting InDesign on Tuesday.

Housekeeping

I’ll have all the grades posted for assignments received by the end of the weekend so we can hit the ground running on Tuesday.

This week…

Your wordpress blogs should be in good shape by Thursday, the due date for assignment #2.As an online assignment this week, I’d like you to go to comment, in detail, ( and as before, on your own blogs ) on this post at waxy.org. Back up your positions. Note: this is not necessarily a black-or-white issue. Some of you have a PR or advertising emphasis: I am interested to read your take on the issue.

Read this post!

This is from the teaching online journalism blog (out of UFlorida).

I’d like you to post a response on your blog ( comment on her site if you like ). Do you agree or disagree? As JPC students, I have to assume you have an opinion. This is due by the end of the day Thursday (so use some of that class time).

Quiz and project grades

I think I’ll post grades to blackboard  (usual place), but I’ll provide any comments on the post itself. Please keep up. I figure you guys had an extra 1-1/2 hours today to get your stuff done and some of your are not off to a very good start.

Photoshop project due

by the end of Tuesday. I’ll be checking so post late at your own risk (plus there’s that inconvenient time stamp) — it’s better to get the assignment in on time since the late penalty is a drop of a full letter grade per class period.

Also be aware that we’ll be hitting inDesign first thing when I get back — Photoshop already pushed us off the syllabus a little bit.

After a quick blog tour….

Some of you have work to do. Your photoshop assignment is due on Tuesday, posted to your blog. Think about how it appears on the site — if it looks better as a link, post it as a link (there are some aesthetic considerations in a design class, you know). By Tuesday I also want to see:

  • good looking theme for your page
  • a brief bio post
  • a completed blog roll for this class

The google assignment should be posted by Thursday, and there will be another assignment due Tuesday. And just to make it interesting, if you populate your blog with material beyond what I’ve assigned I’m prepared to offer extra credit, to the value of one quiz. Questions? Drop me an email or drop a comment on the Questions? page.

Next up, in your virtual classroom

Next week, after you’ve posted your photoshop project to your blog, google yourself and write about what you find. I’m not talking about people with similar names: go into the search engine and find out what’s on the internet about you.
